The Monumental Brass Society’s 2009 Conference:

Detail from the monumental brass of Bishop Robert Wyville (d. 1375)

4th – 6th September 2009

The 2009 Conference is based on the memorials at Salisbury Cathedral and is set in the broader context of commemoration for the clergy in the Middle Ages. Their role, both in meeting the needs of the living and of the dead, will be explored together with papers devoted to their own commemorative needs and in particular through memorials for the clergy. Similarities with other art historical representations of the clergy, such as their seals, will also be discussed.

The Conference will also include a visit to the parish church of St Thomas and the opportunity to see the important Webbe brass and also the restored Doom painting and the commemorative inscriptions and merchant marks on the beams of the church. Visits will also be made to St Martin’s to, see the Carpenter brass, and also to St Edmund’s and to see the brass of Henry Dove (d. 1616).

A tour of the Cathedral will also be included, led by the notable architectural historian, Tim Tatton-Brown. This will include the opportunity to see the magnificent Wyville brass and the collection of tombs of bishops of Salisbury.
