Annual General Meeting

These days we have only two meetings a year, including our AGM,  in London, but instead prefer to get out and about, holding the remainder of our meetings around the country, often in churches where we can study brasses, incised slabs and other monuments in their architectural context. Although these meetings are very popular with members, many are unable to attend. So, from Spring 2005 we we will providing picture reports of our meetings, to supplement the full written reports that appear in MBS Bulletin. To see these reports, click on the Past Events bar at the top of the page.

General meetings

Proceedings start at 2pm, unless noted below. Entry is free and MBS members may invite non-member visitors to attend.

SOUTH MIMMS

The church is noted for its connections with members of the medieval Frowyk family of London and Middlesex who were lords of the manor for three centuries. The French inscription brass to Henry Frowyk,[1386], is the earliest surviving in the church. The important brass memorial to Thomas Frowyk, [1448], and his widow, Elizabeth, together with their six sons and thirteen daughters, has recently been moved to the North (Frowyk) Chapel. Attendees

will be given an opportunity to appreciate the church, view the Frowyk memorials together with a further six 17th century brasses and important canopy monuments of comparable date.

The visit will include a series of short talks as follows:

The Frowyk Family of Middlesex and London by Jessica Freeman

Henry Frowyk’s Foundation Stone at the Guildhall Chapel, London by Nick Holder

Commemoration of the Frowyks at South Mimms by Jon Bayliss

The Brasses of South Mimms by Derrick Chivers

Arrangements have also been made for access to the nearby church at Ridge.

The building contains a fine early 16th century military indent, a wall painting

of St. Christopher and other medieval features which are of interest.

St Margaret’s Ridge will be open between 11.30-1.00 for those wishing to visit.

South Mimms Church is reasonably close to Potters Bar station on the line from King’s

Cross then catch Bus 84 to the White Hart Inn (a journey time of 7 minutes with a

service every 20 minutes). The postcode for the church for satellite navigation is EN6 3PN.

Ample parking is available.
